Week 13 Sunday Battle

Bob may have given up in his old age.
Three players made it this past Sunday (is Bob still living in Oshkosh??):  Alan, Jut, and Tony.  Jut opened the day with a 6-2 win over the the others.

Week 12 = Return To Action

Ruby either mad or looking to eat his racquet.
July 10 was the evening of Dave Ruby's anger, highlighted by a tossing of his racquet over the fence.  The night of games at UWO saw a showdown including Michael, Dave, Jut, and Tom.  Without recollection of scores due to too much drinking, you just get the finals:

Tom: 2-1
Michael: 0-3   =  0-1 for the night.
Dave: 1-2  = 0-1 for the night.
Jut: 3-0  = 1-0 for the night.

Standings at the end of week 12

Vincent: 7-1
Bricco: 3-1
Jut: 15-6
Michael: 8-6
Alan: 1-1

Week 11 in Delay

DC showdown with Jaybird and Jutdog
Week 11 featured the week of July 4 - always a good time for tennis.  I suspect something of a match happened in Oshkosh, but I was absent.  Visiting the old Door County region, Saturday July 6 saw a massive showdown between Jut and his brother Jaybird.  Jut opened uncharacteristically with a solid 6-1 beat down of Jay in set one.  Somewhat miraculously, Jaybird pulled through to take set 2 with a nice 6-3 showing.  The last set wasn't to disappoint either, with the duo facing off at 4-3, Jut with the slight advantage.  Jut added another game moving it to 5-3, but Jaybird came back to win another.  At 5-4, in multiple deuces, Jut pulled it off when Jay hit the ball 2.5 inches out.

Without knowing if anyone else played, the week was a quiet one.  Jut pulled the non-conference win over Jaybird, moving to 14-6.  If any of you played, just let me know.

Standings at the end of week 11

Vincent: 7-1
Bricco: 3-1
Jut: 14-6
Michael: 8-5
Alan: 1-1
Dave: 2-6
Tony: 3-9
Bob: 1-5
Ian: 1-2
Steph: 0-1
Jessie: 0-2

Week 10 End = Michael Revival

Michael goes 2-0 for the day
Sunday, June 30 proved to be Tennis-Lite, with only 3 players showing up.  Michael, Dave and Tony showed to battle, with Dave and Tony teaming up against Michael first.  Though a good fight, Michael was able to pull away with the 6-3 win.

Tony, being married, is now only allowed 50 minutes away from the house each day, so he had to promptly depart after the match, leaving Dave to take on Michael.  Michael didn't seem to struggle, taking Dave out 6-0.

On the day:

Michael: 2-0
Dave: 0-2
Tony: 0-1

Through end of week 10

The Ian and Jessie Throw Down Show

Out of storage comes the racquet and Jessie.. Ian too!
With heaps of trash talking flying in all directions, the stage for the long-anticiated showdown between Ian O and Jessie O was set.  Ian ended his break from the game, returning in rather large and intimidating fashion.  Jessie was exceptionally agressive in her debut, certainly causing a bit of fear in the sleeping giant that is Olvera.  And to the delight of spectators, both parties hit balls in.  Battles back and forth surged, with Olvera slowly carving out a lead.  After much give and take, Olvera edged Jessie 6-1, moving to an impressive 1-0 on the year.

Meanwhile, Vincent and Jut teamed up for their first doubles match-up, taking on Dave the Human Net Beast and Mikedog Hoefferle.  A solid 6-1 showing snapped Jut's 5 game losing streak.

A shuffle of players saw Mike and Jut throwdown against Ian the Victorious and Vincent.  A solid battle ensued, with Vincent serving with more power than usual, and Ian often confusing games between tennis and hockey.  Jut and Mike were playing pretty good, and were able to pull out a 4-2 lead. With Ian taking his service and moving the duo to behind just a game, Jut and Mike pulled out the win 6-3, snapping Vincent's impressive reign of tennis terror.

Dave and Jessie matched up, with Dave letting out his go go gadget netarm, blasting Jessie to a place of fear and pain (see Jessie's FB posting 2 days later).  A 6-1 matchup saw Dave revived and Jessie satisfied with her first outting in 27 years.

Jut also faced Vincent again in the routine head to head match-up, with neither party playing particularly well.  Vincent, despite playing 29 straight hours of tennis with only routine breaks for text messages, was able to efficiently destroy Jut with a 5-0.  A resurgence of Jut helped to take two consecutive games, with Vincent finishing it 6-2.

Additional squabbling ensued following these sets, including attacks of darkness on the facility lighting.  But tennis prevailed, with Jut and Mike taking on Dave and Ian.  A blitz attack led by Mike, though briefly interrupted by gadget arm, promptly crushed Dave and Ian 6-3.

End scores for the day:

Vincent: 2-1
Mike: 2-1
Ian: 1-2
Jessie: 0-2
Jut: 3-1
Dave: 1-2

Through Week 9

Alan: 1-1
Dave: 2-4
Tony: 3-8

Week 9: The Day of Vincent and Michael

Mike says:  "I won, I won. Yeah!"
This Sunday (June 23) welcomed tennis alum Alan Siman - Alan even had a new racquet to debut.  A solid 6 showed up in total, including Bob, Jut, Tony, Michael, Vincent, and Alan.

Games started with Bob & Jut Vs Alan and Vincent, while Tony and Michael battled.  The doubles match was the tightest of the year, with ties at 3 and 5, and eventually heading into a tiebreaker.  Vincent and Alan stormed back for a 2-4 deficit in the tiebreaker to smack down Jut and Bob 7-6 (7-4).

Michael, who was relegated to the Bush League for the day, took down Tony 6-1, 6-1.

Next, Jut and Vincent again faced each other in a head to head, while Tony and Michael teamed up to take on Alan and Bob.

Jut, having lost 4 consecutive matches to Vincent in the week alone, had some confidence with a  4-3 lead.  But a strong ending from Vincent and a love of hitting the ball out by Jut combined to give Vincent the win 6-4, moving him to 5-0 on the summer.

Tony and Michael had no problem smacking down Bob and Alan, finishing it 6-1.

End results of the day:

Michael: 2-0
Vincent: 2-0
Alan: 1-1
Tony: 1-1
Jut: 0-2
Bob: 0-2

The Fall of Jut. The Intro of Dave and Vincent.

Vincent quickly moves to 3-0 this summer
Entering Wed night, Jut was 10-0, including a solid destroying of Michael in the Oshkosh Olympic final (6-0) that left Michael scared of tennis and the color green-yellow for days.

Enter Vincent Clune, the unexpected but invited tennis player who first appeared on the scene last year at two UWO evening outings.  Vincent, who is a current high school player for Oshkosh North, was certain to inflict some damage into Jut's record.

In addition, the evening brought out Dave Ruby, master of the running lob and new tennis player.

Opening up the evening was a match-up of Bricco and Jut vs Vincent, which ended quickly with a 6-2 beat down facilitated by Vincent.  Dave quickly pounded Palmeri as well 6-1.

Bricco then moved over to take on Palmeri and Dave, while Jut battled (or attempted to battle) Vincent.  Bricco held 6-4, while Jut was solidly destroyed (6-2, 6-4).

The last match of the evening came as Jut and Dave teamed up vs Vincent and Bricco.  The match was called early due to the lights going out, with Vincent and Bricco grabbing the default win (score was 5-4), despite the almost assured comeback led by Dave's monster presence at the net.

End results for the day:

Bricco: 2-1
Vincent: 3-0
Jut: 0-3
Dave: 1-2
Palmeri: 0-2

Standings through Wed June 19:

Vincent: 3-0

Week 8 Flies By

Bob earns his first win of the year!
Damaging winds and torrential downpours resulted in a last minute cancel of the Wednesday night match.  However, Sunday was certainly a go, featuring the first annual Father's Day Open.  Three out of four showed, with Bricco bowing out later than the last minute (BRICCCOOOO!!).  Required format was a rotating 2 on 1, best of 3 sets.  Winners were anyone who snagged 2 sets.

The day opened with Jut Vs Michael and Bob, with Jut dropping the opening game on his service.  The set ended strong for Jut, taking it 6-2.  Michael Vs Jut and Bob followed, with a slightly more competitive 6-3 win for Jut and Bob.

The last set proceeded in unique fashion, with Jut and Michael up 2-1 and in the midst of the 4th game when Michael forfeited the match due to leash tightening.  Jut continued to play Bob to finish the set with a win (6-2), but Michael's forfeit cost him a loss while giving Bob a win over Michael.  Bob therefore snags his first win of the year!

End results of the day:
Jut: 3-0 for 1 win
Bob: 2-2 for 1 win
Michael: 0-3 for 1 loss

Through Week 8

Jut: 10-0
Bricco: 1-0
Michael: 2-4
Tony: 2-5
Bob: 1-3
Steph: 0-1
Ian: 0-0
Alan: 0-0
Dave: 0-0
Jessie: 0-0

Week 7 Tourney!

A wild weekend of games took place in Oshkosh, including a great 6-player tennis tourney ripe with upsets, comebacks, and full-on ball-dropping.

Palmeri, the comeback kid!
The tennis side of the games involved 6 players, each playing two short 3-game seeding matches, followed by a bracket elimination tourney.

At the end of seeding, Michael earned the 2 seed while Jut snagged the 1 seed (each getting a round 1 bye).  Tony Palmeri opened up as the 5 seed vs 4 seed Jamie M.  Tony was down 5-3, and the curtains were being pulled, but an amazing comeback including tremendous hustle brought about a 4 game terror by Tony, pulling off the win 7-5.

Tony then faced Jut in the semi-finals, while Michael faced Jaybird in the other bracket.  Jut took out Tony 6-0, while Michael took care of Jaybird 6-4.

In the consolation game (for 3rd), Tony was up 3-0 over Jaybird, but let it slip away, finishing up with a Jaybird win at 6-4.

Michael never really got anything started in the championship game, dropping to Jut 6-0.

Totals for the day:

Tony: 1-2
Michael: 1-1
Jut: 2-0

Overall 2013 standings:

Jut: 9-0
Bricco: 1-0
Michael: 2-3
Tony: 2-5

Alan: 0-0
Steph: 0-1
Bob: 0-3

Next Up:  Wed at UWO at 8:30pm weather permitting.

And so it begins...

Courts were dry by 8:30pm
Wednesday night tennis has officially been kicked off.  What was looking like a great doubles match-
up featuring the return of both Bricco and Robert the Robber Poeschl to go along with Jut and Palmeri ended up being a fine night of singles.

Palmeri played the "I'm old" card, which could either mean he is old or his wife (just married this past weekend) has already taken control and cancelled his participation.

Bricco was more on the fence, but once Jut suggested the games would be cancelled, Bricco took the bait and climbed in the tub with his ladymate, together eating garlic.  As it became clear the weather was turning for the good, Bricco cried "wet court".  Bush league.

What was left was a good head to head between Bob and Jut.

Despite rains all day, tornado-like winds, and what might have been Clintonville-ish earthquakes, the courts were in good shape.  Over 96% of the court and near backcourt was dry.  In fact, Bob, who often falls, didn't even fall - a clear indication of the stability and dryness of the courts.

And damn, Bob was just wailing on the ball, left and right, corner shots, slices that hardly bounced like a dropped baby.  That is, of course, until the game started.

Bob opened with confidence, nearly taking the first game.  However, Jut broke serve and continued to win 4 straight.  Bob's revenge was short, taking only game 5.  Set 1 ended with a Jut win at 6-1.

Set 2 went fast.  5-0 lead for Jut was briefly interrupted by a 1 game win by Bob.

Jutdog: 1-0
Bob: 0-1

Through Week 7.5
Jut: 7-0
Bricco: 1-0
Michael: 1-2
Tony: 1-3
Ian: 0-0
Alan: 0-0
Steph: 0-1
Bob: 0-3

Week 6 enemy showdown: More hype, less battle

Overheads killed Michael all day, hitting only 1 out of 7
The long-anticipated showdown between Michael Hoefferle and Jut Mitchell - two opposing enemies who really can't stand each other in any way - was set to occur the Sunday of Week 6.  Bob Poeschl continues to be relegated to the minor leagues, as he isn't ready for Oshkosh Tennis Smack.  Palmeri is in Vegas getting married, and there weren't enough additional players to make a doubles battle.

The day started out in shining fashion for Mikedog.  Two quick points in game one, with an eventual 3-1 lead.  However, Jutdog came back tying it for deuce.  Michael fell 0-1.  Then 0-2 and 0-3.  The fourth game was service break for Michael, bringing it to 3-1.  Jutdog won the next two games, taking a solid 5-1 lead.  Michael pulled out two unreturnable serves in the seventh game, closing the gap to 5-2. Jutdog finished the last game in 4 straight points, sealing the first set.

Michael, looking to do better in set two, was not better in set two.  Overheads plagued him all day, as did most shots requiring hustling.   Michael lost the second set 6-1.

Final score of the day:  Jutdog wins 6-2, 6-1

Jutdog: 1-0
Mikedog: 0-1

Through Week 6
Jut: 6-0
Bricco: 1-0
Michael: 1-2
Tony: 1-3
Ian: 0-0
Alan: 0-0
Steph: 0-1
Bob: 0-2

Quiet Sunday for Week 5

Tony Palmeri eyeing the ball up.
Continuing to play at UWO for fear of deadly lake flies, tennis action was sharp and efficient in Week 5.  With only Jutdog and Tony able to play, the ensuing singles match was a showdown of hatred and disgust.

Jutdog took Tony down 6-1, 6-1 for the win.

Meanwhile, the league office has determined that Bob Poeschl is turning into a pussy, having not played since the early days of Spring.

No tennis happened this week Wed.

Season standings at the end of Week 5:

Jut: 5-0
Bricco: 1-0

Week 4 at UWO

Lakeflies moved this weekend's contest to the great courts at UWO.  And the weekend saw "regulars" Bob and Tony out of commission (congrats to Tony's fiancee Lori on her Masters in Urban Planning from UW Milwaukee).

Two new faces premiered this week in Justin Bricco and Stephanie Tschech.  For Bricco, this is the first reunion with Jut in at least 7 years, dating back to the days on Sterling, and the UWO Sociology grad's first return to campus in several years.

Bricco and Jut (Cargin hiding), Wright St era
Steph, a former solid high school singles player, completely redeemed herself by making it to the court after a prior no call no show.

Jut and Michael rounded out the group of 4.

Opening the morning, Bricco and Jut quickly moved to 3-0, but a combination of Michael getting a few nice serves in and Jut's inability to hit anything made the set close, with the team of Justins taking it at 6-4.

Bricco and Michael teamed up next, taking the set 6-3.

The final set saw Michael and Justin crush the two newcomers 6-1.

Set tall for the day:
Bricco: 2-1, 13 games
Jut: 2-1, 15 games
Steph: 0-3, 8 games
Michael: 2-1, 16 games

The full 3 sets were considered 1 match, so the overall tally for the "league" nets Jut, Bricco and Michael with a win, and Steph with a loss.  Bricco concluded the day (paraphrase) "Jut, you're not such an asshole to play with anymore."

Final Overall Standings after week 4:
Jut: 4-0
Bricco: 1-0
Michael: 1-1
Tony: 1-2
Ian: 0-0
Alan: 0-0
Steph: 0-1
Bob: 0-2

Week 3 Old Time Showdown

Three years ago, tennis summer consisted of Jutdog V Tony on a normal Sunday.  Week 3 was a return to this old tradition, with Jut and Tony squaring off.

Originally slated to game, both Bob and Michael came in the wrong gear, forgetting that tennis does not require hockey garb.  Upset at Michael's suggestion for the skates, Bob leveled Michael, instantly disqualifying Bob (unneccesary assault of another player) and Michael (being a pussy).

Bob levels Michael for telling him it was hockey dress-up day
Tony opened up the day with a 1-0 lead, with advantage Tony in the second game.  However, Jutdog came back to win 6-1.  Set two matched the first, with the win going to Jut (6-1, 6-1).

Standings for the day:
Jutdog: 1-0
Tony: 0-1

Overall standings:
Jut: 3-0
Tony: 1-2
Ian: 0-0
Alan: 0-0
Steph: 0-1
Michael: 0-1
Bob: 0-2

Next week tennis is slated for Sunday 9am.

Week 2 = Warm Weather

Bob struggles with an 0-2 start to the year.
The exceptional tennis weather continued for week 2, featuring Bob, Tony & Jut on Sat May 4.  The excited-to-get-back-to-playing Stephanie was a no call no show. Intimidation?  Maybe.  But the miss costs her an automatic loss.  Yet to play a game, there remains uncertainty about her game.

Forced to play 3 sets of 1 vs 2, the day began with Bob taking on Jut and Tony.  A lighting quick 0-6 set for Bob dampened any excitement he had coming into the day.  Jutdog was alone next, taking down the boys 6-1.  Last was the Palmeri, who fell 2-6.

The end tally was:
Jutdog 3-0
Bob 1-2
Tony 1-2

The full 3 sets were considered 1 match, so the overall tally for the "league" nets Jut with a win, and both Tony and Bob with a loss.

Final Overall Standings after week 2:

Jut: 2-0
Tony: 1-1
Ian: 0-0
Alan: 0-0
Michael: 0-1
Steph: 0-1
Bob: 0-2

Opening Day 2013

Bob drops the season's opening match
Michael and Bob open the day with a solid 6-3 set vs Jut and Tony.  An opening break to Jut's serve in the 2nd set looked good for the duo.

However, a surprisingly fast 6-0 run by Jut and Tony concluded the 6-1 2nd set.  With time short, the 3rd set concluded 3-2 with the edge going to Jut and Tony.

Tally at the end of opening day:

Tony 1-0
Jut 1-0
Michael 0-1
Bob 0-1

Ian 0-0
Alan 0-0
